Strickling : ICANN Have Opened an Office, since Istanbul is a Crossroad and Entry Point into So Many Parts of World - 1
Assistant Secretary of Commerce in US responsible for communications and information policy and National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) Administrator Larry Strickling : "Cyber security is very similar but first of all, cyber security is a huge topic in terms of the issues that are involved in that discussion. In many cases it is up to individual companies to be doing what they need to do to educate their employees and to make sure that their systems are not vulnerable to attack or made as strong against an attack as possible. This is an area in which there is a lot of informal cooperation across governments and that's to be encouraged."
As soon as September has arrived, many ICT congress and events held in Istanbul. The almost important was a Forum organized by Transport, Maritime and Communication. The issues of this ministry and the vision, mission, future targets were the subject of this event. Local and foreign executive, expert or authority was there in this forum was organizing once in a 4 years. This time 15+ foreign minister or deputy had been attended to this meeting and Lawrance Strickling is one of that important attendees.
Whole world is negotiating for the future of communication and internet. So, we had a video interview with Mr.Strickling for turk-internet.com visitors in 2 parts:
turk-internet.com: Hi Larry.
Hi, how are you?
turk-internet.com: Fine, thanks. First of all, could you introduce yourself for our audience?
Sure. My name is Larry Strickling and I am the Assistant Secretary of Commerce in US responsible for communications and information policy. And through that I run an agency in US called National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).
turk-internet.com: You are here as a guest of Turkish Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Ministry. What do you think about Turkish communication and information medium?
Firstly, I am very pleased to be here in Turkey and I am very excited that the Minster invited me to come and participate in this forum. I guess this forum holds every 4 years and it is very important for his planning purposes. He gave us a chance to come and recognize Turkey as the global leader in communications and internet that it has become here in this region of the world. And we were glad to come and have a chance to recognize that. Very recently the international organization that coordinates the domain name system ICANN selected Istanbul as one their 3 regional hubs around the world. This is a very important step for ICANN and a very important step for Turkey.
turk-internet.com: I would like to ask you why do you think Istanbul is chosen? We are very glad for that as you sure can understand Could you tell us the reasons?
Well, I was not part of the decision making but I think it was recognition of how important Istanbul is as a crossroads and entry point into so many parts of world.
turk-internet.com: We have some kind of problems with internet like child pornography, cyber security issues and etc...
These are challenges we're facing around the world. Every county faces these issues.
turk-internet.com: Definitely, but what do you think can we do about these as an internet community and what can ISP's do about these matters?
Well, same issues also apply to thing like piracy on the internet, I mean people stealing copyrighted goods. So I think each county is finding its own solutions to these problems. Of course there are some opportunities for an international cooperation but in US for example, we have worked and still working very hard with ISP's in the US to come up with voluntary best practices to deal with some of these issues.
In the issue of child pornography, in addition to their organization that are dedicated to prevent the exploitation children online they work very closely in an informal way with internet service providers to respond situations involving exploited or missing children. So, again those are examples of how it is happening in US. I think other countries are finding their own way through these very important issues.
Cyber security is very similar but first of all, cyber security is a huge topic in terms of the issues that are involved in that discussion. In many cases it is up to individual companies to be doing what they need to do to educate their employees and to make sure that their systems are not vulnerable to attack or made as strong against an attack as possible. This is an area in which there is a lot of informal cooperation across governments and that's to be encouraged.
